Hey Jude

From the episode ‘We’ll Never Have Paris’

I’ve never written whilst still watching before now. I’ve not even finished with the episode where this song appears. But, I’m in tears and they’re complicated and simple at the same time and there’s something I want to share with you…

But first, a bit of context, shall we?

In the episode, Ted’s son, Henry, is visiting while his ex-wife and her new partner go on a trip to Paris. (The one in France.) Do they get engaged there? Stay tuned to find out – like I said, I’ve not yet finished!

Coach Beard, Henry and Ted are outside at Mae’s Pub as a busker begins singing the song “Hey Jude”. Henry points out the Beatles tune to his dad, and shortly after Ted steps away to take a call. In his absence, Coach Beard tells Henry the origins of the song and reminds him that even though it may seem like he’s living life in the middle of a sad song, he has the power to make it better.

I’m in tears because I realized something. We do too. We can take the sad song, and make it better. As the Beatles said, “And any time you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain – don’t carry the world upon your shoulders.” The one you lost wouldn’t want you to. They’d want you to sing out all of the “Na na na nananana nananana’s” as I found myself doing right along with the cast.

“And don’t you know that it’s just you, hey Jude, you’ll do – the movement you need is on your shoulder.” Maybe it is just you right now. But you are not alone. I know I carry Charlie’s words with me every day – he’s right there like a familiar tune. So take comfort in a well-worn song. In remembering. And in new beginnings.

“Then you’ll begin to make it better.”
